Description

Function:

In collaboration with the fundraising team, the Director works within a multi-state geographic territory in the Western Region of the United States as defined by Heifer. This position leads, directs and mentors the major gifts staff within the Western Region as well as manages an independent portfolio of major donors to ensure the development and implementation of the departmental strategic and operation plans.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with Vice President of Philanthropy and other regional Directors of Philanthropy, create strategy and objectives for the Philanthropy Department and implement and monitor fundraising plans for the Western Region.
  • Provide leadership, direction and mentoring to Western Region major gift officers to significantly grow revenue through major donors and to meet the revenue and expense targets of the Western Region.
  • Oversee and direct prospect cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts leveraging a moves management process.
  • Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors using short-term and long-term fundraising strategic plans; secure gifts through the systematic and effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Liaise with appropriate internal teams for development and implementation of
  • resources, materials and proposals for solicitation and fundraising events.
  • Work closely with Vice President of Philanthropy, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Resource Development, other directors of Philanthropy, and Heifer Foundation staff to ensure effectiveness of all Major Gifts activities through development of systems and processes to support major gifts.
  • Collaborate and manage Regional staff to ensure a seamless transition for donors and prospects into major gifts development and develop volunteer leadership councils to promote priority fundraising objectives.
  • Effectively work with and support the President, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and other Heifer executives (Board, International Program Country Directors, etc.) to cultivate and solicit funds from Major Donors.
  • Supervise and lead the development team within the Western Region as required.
  • May perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years’ job-related experience.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Proven track record in securing major and/or planned gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations.
  • Experience primarily in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that require majority of the organization’s budget on an annual basis.
  • International experience and knowledge of global sustainable development and hunger organizations.
  • Minimum of five (5) years in a supervisory capacity.

Most Critical Proficiencies:

  • Inherent curiosity about people is a must.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, inspire and deliver revenues from major gifts.
  • Proven supervisory skills with the ability to lead a team of diverse staff in remote locations.
  • Sense of urgency to deliver the revenue goals while being collaborative and a team player within the Marketing & Resource Development Division and Heifer.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to Association of Fundraising Professionals ethical standards of practice.
  • Strong general management, strategic planning, organizational, implementation and administrative skills.
  • Familiarity with the fundraising history and practices of individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical and process integration skills including data analysis and Excel.

Essential Job Functions and Physical Demands:

  • Constant sitting and working at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently.
  • Ability to prepare and present documents and reports in a well-designed, attractive format with impeccable attention to detail.
  • Willing and able to give directions, plan and observe the work of others.
  • Ability to manage and motivate team members and lead cross-functional teams in meeting deadlines and achieving goals.
  • Ability to combine effective team leadership with the ability to train and work cooperatively with a diverse staff, fostering and maintaining a spirit of unity, teamwork and cooperation among all personnel and volunteers within Heifer International.
  • Constant telephone, face-to-face and electronic communication with colleagues and the general public.
  • Ability to manage and execute multiple tasks, work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to relate to individuals and groups diplomatically and tactfully.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and to maintain confidentiality.
