Technical Operations Manager

Salary: £52,000 to £58,526
Per Diem: Circa US $9,000pa
Hardship Allowance: £2,000pa

Annual Leave: 6 weeks, rising to 8 with service

MAG is a humanitarian organisation clearing the remnants of conflict for the benefit of communities worldwide. MAG is co-laureate of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. We deliver practical, positive solutions that assist the process of peace and stability in conflict and former conflict countries. During the past 20 years we have safely found, removed and destroyed millions of landmines, bombs and missiles.

MAG began its current operations in Somalia in May 2008 to clear conventional weapons and stockpiles in conflict-affected lands of the northern areas of Somalia. Work is centered in the administrative capital of the region, Garowe, where a unit of the local police force receive Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) training and technical support in conjunction with the Puntland Mine Action Centre. (PMAC). MAG has also deployed three roving Community Liaison (CL) teams in the region, delivering risk education and collecting data on contamination levels.

As the senior technical representative in country, you will lead, oversee and safely manage all aspects of EOD and CL operations, as well as manage a team of international staff. Working closely with the Programme Manager, you will provide technical input into proposals and reports, liaise with donors, the UN and government agencies. As the most senior technical manager in country, you will need to be able to think strategically and make operational recommendations to enable the growth of MAG’s work in a complex context.

The post holder will be managing projects and staff across geographically diverse sites and therefore need to be strong team player with excellent management skills. A patient, tactful and diplomatic approach will be required in this challenging environment.

MAG takes its responsibility for the security and wellbeing of its staff very seriously. Due to the current situation in Somalia, living arrangements will involve restricted movement and access to recreational activities is limited. As a result of the security conditions, the post holder will be living and working in close proximity to other MAG staff.

The salary for this position is £52,000 - £58,526pa plus a £2,000pa hardship allowance and per diem of circa US $9,000pa. MAG will also provide accommodation, three international leave flights per year, three paid and funded one week ‘breather breaks’ at a regional destination and insurance, amongst other benefits.
