The PhD candidate will develop a doctoral dissertation (in English) on types and instruments of regulation to control conflict of interest in the public sector and mechanisms to implement and enforce regulation in developed and developing countries. The focus will first of all be on identifying solutions to controlling conflict of interest that take into account the cultural context, weaknesses and limits of the local governance systems in selected low and middleincome countries.
PhD position
The PhD candidate will develop a doctoral dissertation (in English) on types and instruments of regulation to control conflict of interest in the public sector and mechanisms to implement and enforce regulation in developed and developing countries. The focus will first of all be on identifying solutions to controlling conflict of interest that take into account the cultural context, weaknesses and limits of the local governance systems in selected low and middleincome countries. Professor Anne Peters, Vice-President of the Board of the Institute, will be the academic supervisor.
The candidate will be provided a work station at the Institute. The supervisor will be assisting the candidate in selecting a specific topic and on the writing process. In addition, the candidate will benefit from exchanges with an interdisciplinary team of practitioners at the Institute. The Institute will ensure an adequate remuneration of the candidate commensurate with her/his experience for an expected duration of 3 years. The candidate will be expected to focus on the research for his doctoral thesis during 50 % of his work hours and contribute to the Institute’s practical work in collaboration with various donor organisations during the remaining 50 %. Involvement in project work beyond 50 % is possible depending on demand from partner organisations.
Requirements
- Graduate degree in law and compliance with the requirements of the Faculty of Law of the University of Basel regarding doctoral studies.
- Additional graduate or undergraduate degrees in political science, sociology or economics would be an advantage.
- Work experience (2 to 5 years) in the field of public sector governance.
- Substantial work experience in low and middle-income countries.
- Strong interpersonal competence and ability to work in different cultural contexts.
- Demonstrated interest in and ability to conduct independent research and analysis.
- Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language, French in particular, is desirable.
