General information

The Social Transformation Programmes Division (STPD) of the Commonwealth Secretariat comprises of the Education, Gender and Health Sections. The three sections work on key aspects of human development towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) across the Commonwealth. The Division brokers partnerships in international, Commonwealth, regional, bilateral, civil society organisations and the private sector to enhance capacity and impact of human development, in particular the areas of Education, Health and Gender programmes.

Job summary

The Intern will assist the Social Transformation Programmes Division (STPD) in the coordination and implementation of its programme.

Task description

  • Assist in the arrangement of meetings, conferences and events Draft and send letters, memos, emails and other correspondence on behalf of Director as required
  • Research into key programme areas for various projects
  • Provide logistical support across sections as necessary
  • Provide other administrative and programmatic support as necessary

The post holder may also be required to perform any other duties appropriate to the position as may be required from time to time.

UN Election Advocacy Internship

Human Rights Watch’s (“HRW”) Advocacy Department seeks an intern to assist with a global campaign by nongovernmental organizations to improve the membership of the UN Human Rights Council by shining a spotlight on candidate states with poor human rights records, in an election to be held in the UN General Assembly on May 20, 2011. The campaign will also seek to promote the observance of human rights standards through the election process.

Duties will include: Research and drafting regarding issues related to the 2011 election campaign for members of the UN Human Rights Council and the human rights records of candidate states; setting up meetings with diplomats at UN Missions, coordinating internal meetings and communications with allied nongovernmental organizations around the world, and otherwise assisting with administrative work for the election campaign. Assisting with preparation of an innovative website for the campaign.

The internship offers experience in research and the development of advocacy strategies, direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, interaction with the UN, foreign and domestic government officials, and other nongovernmental organizations, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. The internship is unpaid.

Qualifications: Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in international relations, the United Nations, and human rights. Relevant coursework and experience are highly desirable. Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required; web design skills are desirable. Complete written and oral fluency in English is required; knowledge of foreign languages is a plus.

Full time and working in the FoEE office in Brussels

Position to start ideally on the 26th of April 2011. Based in Brussels, full time, for 6 months.

This is a unique opportunity to join and learn within the communications team of a green NGO working at a European level in Brussels. If you can demonstrate an interest in environmental issues, the ability and willingness to learn fast, we can in return offer you the chance to learn and contribute to the support of FoEE campaigns on issues including climate change, corporate accountability, food and biodiversity.

The position we are offering consists of:

Communications

External communications & website support:

  • Draft copy for the website and publications, articles, press releases, stories for internal publications and other materials as requested
  • Edit and proofread materials including reports, funding applications, briefings, articles, press releases, letters, and copy for the website
  • Support the Communications team in keeping the current FoEE website up-to-date and populated with relevant resources and materials
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of FoEE’s social media and web 2.0 presence
  • Contribute to the development of a new FoEE website, including communicating with stakeholders and carrying out consultation
  • Contribute to creative brainstorming for campaign communications plans
  • Support the development of communications tools and materials for FoEE campaigns including videos, cyberactions, exhibitions, presentations
  • Help the Communications team respond promptly to incoming media enquiries

Internal Communications:

  • Assist the Communications Team with the production and distribution of the quarterly FoEE internal electronic newsletter, including sourcing content and images, drafting stories, editing and proofreading, and doing design work

Support to Communications function

  • Stand in for Communications Officers when away

Events support

  • Support the Events Officer with the logistical preparations of events including media stunts, street actions, meetings, seminars, and conferences
  • Contribute to creative brainstorming of ideas for media stunts and events
  • Participate in the design and ordering of events materials

Skills

  • Educated to degree standard, at least 6 months relevant work experience

Intern (Summer): Latin America and the Caribbean

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) is seeking candidates currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs for internships with NDI's Latin America and the Caribbean team. War Crimes Justice Project Intern

In view of the imminent closure of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the fact that the ICTY has already been transferring cases back to local justice systems, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) developed a project (commencing in summer 2008) which sought to identify lessons learned and best practices in investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating war crimes in South Eastern Europe. Project partners were the ICTY, United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and South East Europe based OSCE Field Operations.
A Research Team conducted interviews with local practitioners, experts and international actors in Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia involved in capacity building activities for the benefit of local justice systems. The first phase of the project consisted of a needs assessment resulting in a Final Report which presented the best practices/lessons learnt in addition to a set of recommendations on comprehensive knowledge transfer methodologies and priority needs. The Final Report was issued in September 2009 and the first phase of the project has been finalised.
The OSCE ODIHR Democratization Department is engaged in a follow-up project together with the ICTY, UNICRI, and relevant OSCE Field Operations in the former Yugoslavia. The general purpose of the project is to support the domestic justice sector practitioners in South-East Europe to effectively handle the processing of war crimes cases.
A detailed project proposal was submitted to the European Commission (EC) in November 2009 requesting funding of EUR4M for a comprehensive project ‘Supporting the transfer of knowledge and materials of war crimes cases from the ICTY to national jurisdictions’ later renamed the War Crimes Justice Project (WCJP). The contract for the project (the Contract) was signed in December 2009 and implementation began on 1 May 2010.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The War Crimes Justice Project requires the services of an enthusiastic and hard working intern to assist in all aspects of this very important project.
The candidate will have to be available from May 2011 for a period of 6 months.

The desired intern will have the responsibility of supporting the Project Coordinator, the Project Administration Officer and the Project Assistant. This will require flexibility and a practical approach.

In support of the Project Co-ordinator (War Crimes) assigned tasks may include:

Providing first drafts of project documents and reports;
Assisting to draft and proofread speeches for senior ODIHR staff;
Compiling briefing packs for senior ODIHR staff;
Assisting to draft and proofread official War Crimes Justice Project correspondence; and
Preparing first drafts of assessments on project activities and proposals for future courses of action on that basis.

In support of the Project Administration Officer assigned tasks may include:

Assisting to draft and proofread contracts;
Assisting to draft and proofread terms of reference for implementing partners;
Assisting to draft and proofread donor reports;
Assisting to draft and proofread project reports;
Taking minutes of project meetings; and
Supporting the development of the projects plan of activities.

In support of the Project Assistant assigned tasks may include:

Helping to draft/ proofread consultancy agreements;
Helping to organise events in the region of the former Yugoslavia;
Helping to draft/ proofread event agendas; and
Coordinating with other parts of the ODIHR to solve IT problems (e.g. organising project e-files).

Necessary Qualifications

An undergraduate degree in law or a law-related field;
English as a first language or near native proficiency;
An interest in project management;
An interest in event organisation;
Flexibility to carry out many different types of work as required;
A very practical approach;
An ability to handle stress and manage time well so as to cope with deadlines;
Understanding of the political sensitivities of dealing with war crimes issues in South-East Europe;
Familiarity with the work of the ICTY;
Work experience with the ICTY is desirable; and
An understanding of the national jurisdictions of the former Yugoslavia is an advantage.

For the duration of the internship the person will be covered with life, accident and disability insurance at the cost of the OSCE/ODIHR. The intern will also be able to participate in a group health insurance scheme at his/her own expense. The OSCE/ODIHR is unable to pay any remuneration or bear any expenses incurred by the intern during the stay in Warsaw or for travel to or from the place(s) of assignment. However, any foreign travel (not guaranteed) to the former Yugoslavia or to the partner institutions in The Hague and in Turin will be funded by the ODIHR and interns will receive a per diem allowance for the duration of such travel.
The intern will also be able to participate in training sessions on subjects such as international diplomacy or negotiation skills.

Improved Cookstove. SNV will have an capacity building role within the ICS project(s) building upon
the existing (technical) knowledge and experience within the Vietnamese market. Institutional

potential market for ICS is very large within Vietnam, a country with over 90 million inhabitants.
Intern Position
