Executive Director Lesbian and Gay Equality Project/Movement Building Programme Officer

The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project is looking to employ an experienced, highly productive and effective individual as its Executive Director and another as the Movement Building Programme Officer

The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project is looking to employ an experienced, highly productive and effective individual as its Executive Director and another as the Movement Building Programme Officer.

Roles and responsibilities:

The Executive Director is required to implement the strategy and vision of the organisation. In this role, the individual will be required to have the ability and capacity to undertake strategic implementation, high-level planning, programme development, effective implementation, fundraising, financial management, staff management, representation of the organisation in public, alliance building and networking.

The Movement Building Programme Officer will be required to drive the implementation of the LGEP's core programme. This will include education, the building of critical consciousness, social mobilisation, support for LGBTI movement building, alliance building and the mobilisation of diverse resources for movement building.

Minimum requirements for the Executive Director:

- Five to seven years of working experience, at least three of them in a management position, within the NGO/development/union/human rights/public sector or other relevant experience.

- A clear understanding of the socio-political and economic realities of South Africa and, in particular, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and inter-sexed communities (Knowledge and understanding of the LGBTI community is an advantage but not a necessity.)

- Knowledge, understanding and experience in policy and law reform, movement building, political education and NGO management.

- Experience in financial management and fundraising

- Excellent leadership, cognitive, writing and presentation skills

- A Bachelor’s level degree or equivalent experience


Minimum requirements for the Movement Building Programme Officer:

- At least five years working with organizations at community level.

- An understanding of a range of communities in a South African context (Knowledge and understanding of the LGBTI community is an advantage but not a necessity.)

- A proven ability to conceptualise and implement a programme that builds solidarity within a community

- Some experience in fundraising for specific projects

Junior Convening Officer

CIVICUS is seeking to recruit a Junior Convening Officer to facilitate the effective implementation of CIVICUS' convening strategy and support the work of the regional Convening Officers.

Specific objectives for this position include:

* Supporting CIVICUS' outreach efforts and engagements globally: liaising with partners, members and UN representatives.
* Providing administration and logistical support for meetings, webinar sessions and regional events.
* Providing support to CIVICUS' projects and coordinating interventions together with the Lobbying and Engagement Unit and the Policy Unit.
* Contributing to develop tools and knowledge for civil society network building and management, including communities of practice.
* Contributing to effective cross-organisational working, communication and learning, keeping abreast of current and emerging communication technologies.



The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, knowledge, skills and work related experience:

* A degree in the social sciences, international relations or development studies
* 1-3 years work experience in a non profit and/or civil society organisation
* Knowledge of civil society networks and regional and international organisations
* Solid understanding of civil society issues
* Networking, negotiating, project management and event management skills
* Strong verbal and written communication skills with different audiences at different levels
* Analytical and research skills
* Interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team, possibly from a remote location
* Drive and initiative, willingly taking ownership and adaptins easily to change
* Self-management skills: Manages time and resources efficiently with little supervision, manages emotions and stresses positively
* Budget management skills
* Proposal and report writing skills
* Highly organised and able to work under pressure with tight deadlines
* Language skills: Fluent in English and ideally in any of the following languages: French, Portuguese, Arabic. Further language skills will be considered an advantage
* Computer literacy



Location: Johannesburg, South Africa.

Start date: As soon as possible

Duration: Initially a 2 year contract will be offered.

Job grade: Paterson - B Upper

The salary offered for this position ranges between USD$13 200 - USD 21 200 per annum depending on the level of relevant skills, knowledge and experience which will be determined by the person specification deviation. In addition, employee benefits include Risk Insurance and Medical Aid cover.
