BACKGROUND

ORBIS International is a nonprofit humanitarian organization dedicated to saving sight and eliminating avoidable blindness worldwide. As a significant health crisis, blindness affects 45 million men, women and children around the world, with 80% of those cases treatable or preventable. Founded in 1973 by a group of philanthropists, doctors, and aviation professionals, ORBIS produces long-term sustainable solutions to preventable blindness that emphasize the training of medical personnel, the strengthening of in-country eye care institutions and expanding delivery of quality eye care and prevention strategies in those parts of the world where the need is greatest.

In addition to its flagship Flying Eye Hospital, ORBIS’s main focus today is upon the many long-term capacity building projects it has established in Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, India, Vietnam, Peru, Jamaica and South Africa, with additional projects underway in many other countries around the globe. In each country, ORBIS works with local partner institutions to increase their capacity to provide comprehensive, affordable and sustainable eye care services over the long term. Programs include developing specialized hospital facilities, eye banks, patient and health care worker training, and prevention and treatment programs.

ORBIS International is headquartered in New York City with hubs in London, for Europe, Africa and Middle East regions, and Hong Kong, for all Asian regions. Its budget for 2011 will be over $100M.

POSITION

Based at the ORBIS headquarters and reporting to the CEO and President, the Chief of Programs & Technical Services leads the development of ORBIS’s global program strategy, with worldwide oversight and coordination of 3 critical program functions: Global Eye Care Programs; Program & Technical Services; and Monitoring and Evaluation. S/he will supervise US based program directors, as well as senior program staff in ORBIS’s regional divisions. As the leading program representative of the organization, this individual shall liaise with external representatives of governments, ophthalmic organizations, and NGOs worldwide.

Integral to the success of the new Chief of Programs will be the technical mastery of developing impactful global health programs, coupled with the ability to lead, motivate and inspire excellence in a multi-national staff.
ORBIS seeks a Chief of Programs with approximately 15 years progressive international development and program management experience and 5 years senior level management and supervisory experience, with field experience in developing countries, including hands-on program development and implementation.
