Background | |
The UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. The scope and depth of work of the Chief of a Geographical Region is demanding. It requires experience and in-depth understanding of gender and development issues, women's human rights, as well as management expertise, to provide SROs with the support they need to translate UN WOMEN's strategic plans into effective development initiatives and results. It also requires developing mutually reinforcing partnerships with relevant Member States' Permanent Missions to the United Nations, with colleagues in UN organizations, and with bilateral and non-traditional donors in order to promote inter-agency partnerships, support for UN reform, and mobilization of visibility and resources to advance gender equality and women's empowerment.

Under the supervision of the Director, Programmes, the Chief of the Region has the following key functions:
Function 2: Support to Sub-Regional Offices
Function 3: Programme guidance, management and oversight
Function 4: Advocacy and support to UN coordination, joint programming and reform
Function 5: Office capacity and performance
Impact of Results As a member of the team defining strategies to meet UN WOMEN's objectives, the results expected from the position of Chief, Geographic Section are critical in terms of: 1. The quality of development results and management efficiency of the SROs in the APAS region.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
